Why placement outranks the monitor
The sound at your ears is never just the speaker. It is the direct output of the driver plus every reflection off the desk, walls, and ceiling arriving a few milliseconds later, plus the room's own room modes reinforcing and cancelling in the bass. Placement is how you control that sum. Nearfield monitoring — sitting close, a meter or so from each speaker — is the whole strategy: the closer you sit, the louder the direct sound is relative to the reflected sound, and the more you subtract the room from what you hear. Every step below is a move to increase that direct-to-reflected ratio or to make the two monitors behave identically. Get them right and the monitor finally tells you the truth; get them wrong and no amount of money buys it back.
The setup, step by step

Anchor to symmetry first. Set your desk so the two monitors are mirror images about the room's centre — equal distance to each side wall, both firing down the length of the room rather than across it. Do this before anything else because the two channels must see the same boundaries, or the left and right will have different bass and different reflections and your stereo image will lie. Build the equilateral listening triangle. Measure the gap between the two tweeters, then sit that same distance back, so the speakers and your head form a triangle with three equal sides. This is the geometry the stereo image was mixed for; too wide and the centre falls out into a hole, too narrow and the image collapses toward mono. Put the tweeters at ear height. Raise each monitor until its tweeter is level with your ears in your normal seated position. The tweeter is the most directional part of the speaker, so its balance changes most as you move off-axis; a tweeter firing at your chest sends the treble past you and reads dark and unstable. Pull them 8 to 12 inches off the front wall. Treat that gap as a minimum, not a goal. A monitor jammed against the wall borrows a boomy, exaggerated low end from boundary reinforcement, and that false bass makes you cut low frequencies that were never too loud. Toe them in toward your ears. Angle each monitor so its axis points at your head rather than straight down the room — some toe-in aims the cleanest on-axis sound at the listening position and, just as usefully, steers the first side-wall reflections to arrive later and quieter. Decouple them from the desk. Set each monitor on isolation pads or stands rather than bare on the desktop. A cabinet coupled to a large flat surface pumps energy into it, and the desk re-radiates a smeared, resonant version of the low end back at you. Decoupling also kills the desk-bounce reflection off the surface between you and the speakers, one of the nearest and nastiest early reflections in the room.

Set level and use the room switch. Match the two monitors' input trims so left and right are equal, set a sensible monitoring level, and if the desk had to sit close to a wall, engage the boundary or acoustic-space switch to pull the low shelf down. The one thing placement cannot finish
