Genuinely, yes — with eyes open. Powered monitors bundle amp and speaker, image beautifully at desk distances, and their neutral voicing is a feature once you acclimate. What you give up versus hi-fi speakers: a warmer “voiced” presentation some prefer, and living-room-scale output — nearfields are designed for 1–1.5m. For a desk or small room they are often the best value in the building.
The room decides. Under ~150 ft² at a 1–1.5m desk: 5-inch, full stop — an 8-inch monitor in an untreated 10×11 bedroom isn’t an upgrade; it’s a bass problem with a warranty. The 8’s extra low-end extension only becomes information (rather than mud) with treatment, distance, and ~300+ ft². If you need to hear deeper in a small room, add a calibrated sub to 5s later instead of upsizing woofers now.
A pair, unless you mix mono content exclusively. Stereo placement, panning, and reverb decisions require two speakers in an equilateral triangle. Prices you see on monitor listings are frequently per-side — a “$180 monitor” is a $360 pair, and we price every chain accordingly. If budget forces one box today, buy the first of a pair you can complete, not a single larger speaker.
