Do I need an audio interface if I have a USB mic?

No — the interface is built into the mic. That is the USB mic’s entire trade: convenience now, ceiling later. You skip the interface purchase, but you cannot upgrade the preamp, add a second mic for an interview, or route hardware monitoring flexibly. Hybrid USB/XLR mics are the honest middle path: start over USB, add an interface when the chain grows.

What is a good round-trip latency for recording?

Single-digit milliseconds at a 64-sample buffer is good; 2–6ms is the modern bar for a desktop interface. Round-trip includes converter and driver overhead, so it always exceeds the raw buffer math (64 samples at 48kHz ≈ 1.3ms per side). Below ~10ms most performers stop noticing; above it, timing feel degrades. And if your interface offers direct monitoring, tracking latency stops mattering at all for vocals and voice-over.

Does 24-bit vs 16-bit actually matter?

For recording, yes — as headroom, not “quality”. 24-bit gives ~144dB of theoretical dynamic range versus 96dB, so you can record at conservative levels (~−18dBFS average) without the noise floor creeping up. Every modern interface records 24-bit, so this costs nothing. For finished listening, 16-bit already exceeds any living room’s noise floor; nobody honest claims to hear the difference on playback.

What sample rate should I record at?

44.1kHz for music headed to streaming, 48kHz for anything touching video — and then stop thinking about it. Both capture the full audible band. Higher rates (96/192kHz) double or quadruple file size and CPU for benefits that live outside human hearing, with two narrow exceptions: slightly lower converter latency and headroom for extreme pitch-down sound design. Consistency across a project matters more than the number.
