How the matcher decides
Every output above traces to one of the rules here. We publish them because the logic is the product — a retailer’s “you may also like” can’t tell you an 8-inch monitor will boom in your bedroom, and ours can.
Room-volume bands
We size to cubic feet, not enthusiasm: small under 1,500 ft³, medium 1,500–3,000, large 3,000–5,000, huge above 5,000. Small rooms add free room gain below ~40Hz, which is why they favor sealed subs — the gentle roll-off lands close to flat. Large rooms, where room gain is weak, favor ported alignments for the output-per-dollar economics (Obsessed Garage, powersof10).
Speaker class
Rooms under ~320 ft² of floor, or a seat within ~6 feet, get bookshelves plus a sub; larger rooms and longer distances get towers. Towers crammed into a small room buy boom, not bass (Audioholics, Ma Platine).
Amplifier power
Every +3dB needs double the power, and a doubling of distance costs ~6dB before room reflections. Targeting an 85dB average with 15dB of peak headroom, an 88dB-sensitive pair at ~2.5m sees ~78dB from 1W, ~88dB from 10W, ~98dB from 100W — so the wattage number is headroom, not draw. We normalize 2.83V ratings down 3dB on 4Ω speakers (Benchmark Media). See sensitivity.
Crossover
80Hz is the bass-management starting point — low enough to keep the sub unlocatable, high enough to unload small woofers; small satellites move up to 100–120Hz. It’s a convention, not a law of physics (DALI).
Studio monitors and interfaces
5-inch woofers for rooms under ~150 ft² at a 1–1.5m desk; 8-inch only with treatment, distance, or 300+ ft². Set the equilateral triangle, tweeters at ear height, 8–12″ off the front wall (Violet Recording, HEDD). Interfaces grade on round-trip latency (2–6ms is the modern bar) and clean preamp gain — a broadcast dynamic wants ~60dB (Soundorp, Orphiq).
Budget allocator
The percentage splits are labeled editorial: music leans speakers 45–55% / amp 20–25% / sub 20–25% / stands + cable 5–10%; studio leans monitors 40% / interface 20% / mic 15% / treatment 15% / headphones 10%. Apartment mode forces sealed subs and level-matched advice — bass couples into the building, and the honest fix is a lower level, not a different direction.

What size subwoofer do I need for my room?
Size to cubic feet, not to enthusiasm. Under ~1,500 ft³ (a 12×14 bedroom): a sealed 10–12" is plenty, and room gain does the deep-extension work free. 1,500–3,000 ft³: a 12" sealed or ported. 3,000–5,000 ft³: a ported 12–15" starts earning its box. Over 5,000 ft³ or open-plan: consider dual subs — two moderate subs smooth room modes better than one monster.
How many watts do I actually need?
Less than the marketing suggests, more than the minimum. The math: an 88dB-sensitive pair at ~2.5m plays ~78dB from 1 watt in-room, ~88dB from 10W, ~98dB from 100W — every +3dB doubles power. Target an 85dB average with 15dB of peak headroom and a typical room needs the ability to swing ~40–100W into 8Ω; the average draw at your seat is closer to 10W. 5-inch or 8-inch studio monitors?
The room decides. Under ~150 ft² at a 1–1.5m desk: 5-inch, full stop — an 8-inch monitor in an untreated 10×11 bedroom isn’t an upgrade; it’s a bass problem with a warranty. The 8’s extra low-end extension only becomes information (rather than mud) with treatment, distance, and ~300+ ft². If you need to hear deeper in a small room, add a calibrated sub to 5s later instead of upsizing woofers now.
Sealed or ported sub for an apartment?
Sealed. Apartment rooms are small, and small rooms add room gain below ~40Hz that compensates for a sealed sub’s gentle roll-off — you get the extension without the ported box’s output peak, which is exactly the energy that travels through shared walls. Add the practical wins (smaller box, easier level control) and sealed is our default apartment call. Then set the level a few dB lower than you want, and your neighbors will decide how long you keep the hobby.
Are tower speakers overkill in a small room?
Usually, yes. Under ~320 ft² of floor or with a seat within ~6 feet, a tower’s extra bass extension mostly excites room modes you cannot treat away — boom, not bass. A good bookshelf pair plus a sealed sub gives you the same extension with a level control on the part that misbehaves. Towers earn their footprint in larger rooms and longer listening distances.
Is 80Hz always the right crossover setting?
It is the right starting point, not the right answer. 80Hz keeps the sub unlocatable and unloads small woofers — the convention THX popularized. Move it up (100–120Hz) for small satellites that strain below 100Hz; move it down (60Hz) only for towers with genuine low-frequency capability. Then verify by ear with a bass sweep: you should not be able to point at the sub with your eyes closed.
