How to Set Your Subwoofer's Crossover, Level, and Phase

The crossover slope — how steeply each side rolls off — is usually fixed in consumer gear, but the principle is that the sub's low-pass and the mains' high-pass should meet and sum flat, not both stay loud through the overlap and hump the bass.

Step 3 — Match the level

With placement and crossover set, match the subwoofer's level to your mains so it supports rather than dominates. Play familiar full-range music — not bass-test tracks, which flatter a hot sub — and set the sub gain so the bass feels like part of the same system, present but not announcing itself. Keep whichever position gives more bass, because more output means the two sources are adding rather than fighting.
