Most subwoofer advice starts with the subwoofer. It should start with the room. Cubic footage decides how much output you actually need, how deep the sub must dig unassisted, and whether a ported cabinet is buying you anything besides floor space. If your room is under roughly 1,500 cubic feet — most bedrooms, offices, dens, and a large share of apartment living rooms — the physics tilt hard toward sealed. And once you are shopping sealed subs around $500, the conversation gets short fast: the SVS SB-1000 Pro is the one everything else has to beat.

Two rows do most of the work. The first is 20–270 Hz ±3 dB — quoted with its tolerance window, because a frequency range without one is a marketing sentence, not a spec. A sealed 12 claiming honest 20 Hz extension at this price is the headline. The second is the app: a $500 subwoofer carrying a three-band parametric EQ was unheard of a few product cycles ago, and it changes what you can fix after the box is in the room.

On the honesty front: those are SVS's numbers. But this is also one of the most independently bench-tested budget subs on the market — HomeTheaterHifi published measurements of this exact model, and Sound & Vision reviewed it alongside its ported sibling — and the third-party data tracks the spec sheet's shape rather than exposing it. That is the paper trail you want before $500 leaves your account.

Why sealed wins the small room

Small rooms hand you a free upgrade called room gain: below roughly 40 Hz, the room's boundaries begin reinforcing output right where every subwoofer is running out of steam. A sealed enclosure rolls off gently, at about 12 dB per octave, and that gentle slope plus room gain nets out to surprisingly flat deep bass in rooms under about 1,500 cubic feet.

Ported designs roll off roughly twice as fast below their tuning frequency, so they lean on the port for output a small room would have given a sealed cabinet for free — and they pay for the port with a much bigger box. The SB-1000 Pro is a 13-inch cube you can hide beside a couch. Its ported sibling, the PB-1000 Pro, uses the same driver class in nearly twice the cabinet. In a bedroom or apartment, that is the difference between a sub that fits the room and a sub that gets vetoed by whoever else lives there. So the frame for this review is not "is the SB-1000 Pro a good compromise for small rooms." In a small room, it is the correct tool, not the concession.

The app is the actual feature

Plenty of subs at this price give you two knobs on the back panel and a phase switch you will set once, wrongly, in the dark. The SB-1000 Pro moves control to a Bluetooth app: low-pass frequency and slope, phase and polarity, room-gain compensation, three bands of parametric EQ, and savable presets.

The parametric EQ is the part with teeth. Every small room has at least one room mode — a dimension-locked frequency where bass piles up 6-10 dB hot and sits on everything. You cannot move the wall, but you can drop a 4 dB cut on a 45 Hz peak from the couch in ninety seconds, by ear or with a free phone RTA as a rough guide. That single cut is routinely a bigger audible upgrade than a driver-size jump, and almost nothing else at $500 offers it.

Presets earn their keep in shared buildings: a "late night" preset trimmed 5-6 dB with the deepest octave shelved down is one tap, and it is the difference between owning a subwoofer in an apartment and apologizing for one.

Integration: the twenty minutes that decide everything

A subwoofer graded in isolation is half a review, because integration decides whether you hear "more bass" or "one seamless system." Three moves, in order:

  1. Crossover at 80 Hz to start. It is the convention for a reason — low enough that the sub stays unlocatable, high enough to unload your mains. Adjust only with cause.
  2. Placement before EQ. Corners buy output but excite every mode; a spot along the front wall, pulled off the corner, is the usual best seat. If you can slide the sub to the couch and crawl the floor, do the crawl.
  3. Phase by ear. Flip 0/180 from the listening position with bass-heavy material; keep whichever is louder through the crossover region. Then EQ the worst remaining peak.

One practical note: subs rarely sit next to the electronics, so measure the run before ordering cable — a shielded 15-foot subwoofer cable covers most rooms with slack to route along the baseboard, and length, not price, is the only spec that matters here.

What it is not

The SB-1000 Pro is not a large-room subwoofer. Push it into an open-plan space or a 3,000-plus cubic foot theater room and you are asking one sealed 12 to pressurize a volume that wants ported output or multiple subs; SVS's own lineup routes you to the PB-1000 Pro or the 2000-class there. It also will not win a pure output-per-dollar contest — a big ported box at the same price will play louder at 30 Hz in a big room. That is the trade, and in a small room it is the right trade.

And a word on levels, since subwoofers make it easy: home-theater reference peaks are thrilling and also loud enough that sustained sessions deserve respect. Around 85 dB average is the commonly cited mixing reference precisely because it is loud; treat long stretches above it as something to budget, not a default. Your ears are the one component you cannot re-buy.

  • Small rooms, under 1,500 cubic feet (bedrooms, offices, apartments): A. This is the room band the SB-1000 Pro is built for — sealed roll-off plus room gain, PEQ to tame the inevitable mode, a cabinet that fits, and manners on tap for neighbors.
  • Medium rooms, 1,500-3,000 cubic feet: B+ for music, B for reference-level theater. One will do honest work; theater ambitions at higher levels want the ported sibling or a second unit.
  • Large rooms, 3,000+ cubic feet: C. Wrong tool. Go ported, go bigger, or go dual.

Not if it is sealed and set up with restraint. Driver size decides how easily a sub makes deep bass, not how loud you are forced to play it. A sealed 12 like the SB-1000 Pro running 5 dB below reference in an apartment is more polite than a small ported sub straining at its limits. The genuinely neighbor-relevant variable is structure-borne vibration, so keep it off hollow floors, use a preset trimmed for late-night levels, and be honest about hours.

Does the SB-1000 Pro really reach 20 Hz?

SVS specs it at 20-270 Hz ±3 dB, and that is a manufacturer number, not ours. Independent bench tests, including HomeTheaterHifi's published measurements, track that window closely. In a small room you also collect room gain below roughly 40 Hz, which pushes real in-room extension toward and past the spec rather than short of it.

What crossover setting should I use with it?

Start at 80 Hz, the long-standing bass-management convention, and move only with a reason: 100-120 Hz for very small satellite speakers, lower only if your mains are genuinely full-range. Set it in your receiver or streaming amp if possible and leave the sub's own low-pass bypassed so you are not stacking two filters on the same handoff.

Sealed or ported for music in a small room?

Sealed, in almost every case. Small rooms reinforce deep bass on their own — room gain — which compensates for a sealed cabinet's gentler roll-off. A ported box buys maximum output per dollar, which matters in large rooms and matters much less in 1,200 cubic feet, where its size and tuning buy you little you can use.
