The sealed-versus-ported argument is the oldest running fight in bass, and it stays alive because both camps are right — about different rooms. A sealed cabinet and a ported one are not a quality tier and a budget tier; they are two tools with different output curves, and which curve you want is decided almost entirely by the cubic footage you play it in. Name your room and the argument ends. This comparison does the naming: how each box works, what room gain changes, where the output economics flip, and a same-brand pair that makes the whole trade concrete.
How a sealed box works
A sealed subwoofer is a driver in an airtight cabinet. The trapped air acts as a spring that helps control the cone, and the sealed enclosure's output rolls off gently below its corner frequency — about 12 dB per octave. Gentle is the operative word: a sealed sub keeps producing usable, if diminishing, output well below its rated corner. The format's costs are equally simple: no port assistance means less maximum output per watt and per dollar, and reaching very deep frequencies at high level leans hard on driver excursion and amplifier power. Its failure mode at the limit is graceful compression rather than mechanical noise, and the cabinet stays compact — there is no port volume to house.
How a ported box works
A ported enclosure adds a tuned vent — a column of air that resonates, like breath over a bottle, at a chosen tuning frequency. Near that tune the port does real work alongside the driver, and the same driver and amplifier deliver several dB more output than they could sealed: that economy is the entire reason the format dominates large rooms and spec-sheet shootouts. The bill arrives below the tune, where output collapses at roughly 24 dB per octave — twice the sealed slope — and the port stops loading the driver, which is why ported designs carry infrasonic filters to protect the cone from content beneath the tuning frequency. Push a port past its limits and it announces itself: chuffing, the turbulent noise of air moving too fast through the vent, arrives before compression does. And the port itself is a volume purchase — a ported box built on the same driver runs substantially larger than its sealed sibling.
A third path exists: the passive radiator, a weighted, unpowered cone standing in for the port. Port economics without chuffing, at extra build cost — common in compact designs, and graded the same way: by its tuning behavior.
Room gain: the thumb on the scale
Here is the variable the forum fights skip. Small rooms do not treat deep bass neutrally — below roughly 40 Hz, a small room's boundaries progressively reinforce output, a free low-end shelf called room gain. Now overlay the two roll-off slopes. A sealed sub's gentle 12 dB-per-octave decline meets a room boost rising in the same region, and the two approximately cancel: in rooms under about 1,500 cubic feet, a sealed sub rated to 20 Hz on paper plays functionally flat, or better, at the seat. This is the standard result across published room-acoustics guidance, and it is why our small-room grades default sealed.
The same physics does less for a ported box. Above its tune, fine — but its 24 dB-per-octave collapse below tune is too steep for room gain to rescue, so the deepest half-octave a small room would have gifted a sealed cabinet goes partly unclaimed. Meanwhile the large room — 3,000-plus cubic feet, open plans, high ceilings — offers little room gain at all. There, nothing is free: extension and output must be purchased with hardware, and the port's several-dB economy becomes the whole ballgame. Same two boxes, opposite verdicts, and the room made both calls.
The folklore audit
The received wisdom says sealed subs are "tight" and "musical," ported subs "boomy" and "for movies." Grade the claim honestly and it mostly dissolves. What listeners call boom is usually the room — modal peaks and placement, which afflict both formats identically — or a ported design tuned high to flatter a spec sheet. A well-engineered ported sub crossed properly is not audibly "slow" in most rooms: the technical difference people reach for, group delay near the tuning frequency, is a low-bass timing effect measured in milliseconds, its audibility genuinely debated, and in ordinary homes it is buried under room-mode behavior ten times its size. The honest, durable differences are the ones already on the table: box size, roll-off slope, limit behavior, output per dollar, and how each curve interacts with room gain. Reading a subwoofer spec sheet without getting played
Format wars aside, the spec-sheet skills transfer. Four habits:
- Demand the window. A rated response means little without its tolerance — 20 Hz at ±3 dB is a claim; "20 Hz" alone is a wish. Both figures in the table below carry the window, which is exactly why they can be compared at all.
- Read amplifier watts as RMS, not peak. Continuous ratings describe the amplifier; peak numbers describe a marketing meeting. Compare like to like across brands.
- Expect the port tune to go unpublished. Most makers do not print the tuning frequency; the tell is the rated low corner against the enclosure size. A small ported box claiming very deep extension is promising physics it will struggle to deliver at level.
- Treat extension and output as separate purchases. A sub can reach 20 Hz quietly or 30 Hz loudly at the same price. Sealed buyers in small rooms are buying extension and letting the room supply output; ported buyers in big rooms are buying output first. Knowing which one you are buying is most of the skill.

- Under 1,500 cubic feet (bedrooms, dens, apartments): sealed. Room gain does the deep-extension work, the compact cabinet fits the space, and the roll-off math is on your side. This is the least ambiguous call in subwoofer buying.
- 1,500-3,000 cubic feet: use decides. Music-first at sane levels: sealed remains our default. Reference-level home theater with real LFE appetite: ported — or dual sealed, since two smaller sealed cabinets also smooth modal response across seats, an outcome one big box cannot buy at any price.
- 3,000-5,000 cubic feet: ported. The output economics govern; buy the port and give it the floor space it demands.
- Above 5,000 cubic feet and open plans: ported, plural. One subwoofer of any design is under-gunned; this is multiple-sub territory and a different budget conversation.
- Apartment overlay, any size: sealed, with a trimmed late-night preset and honest hours. Structure-borne vibration, not air pressure, is what neighbors report; a sealed cube decoupled from a hollow floor with 5 dB pulled after ten is the difference between owning a sub and apologizing for one.
A word on the music-versus-movies shorthand, since it quietly decides the medium band: the real variable is the program material's demand curve. Film LFE tracks hold sustained content in the 20-30 Hz region at high level — output demand, the ported box's home turf. Most music asks for accuracy from 30 Hz up with occasional excursions below — extension-first, the sealed box's brief. Sealed, without much debate. The room physics favor it — apartment rooms are small, and room gain below 40 Hz restores the deep extension a sealed cabinet's gentle roll-off gives up. The neighbor physics favor it too: what travels through a building is structure-borne vibration and sustained deep output, so a compact sealed sub, decoupled from the floor, running a late-night preset trimmed several dB, is the polite configuration. A ported box's extra output headroom is capability an apartment cannot spend anyway.
Is a sealed subwoofer really "tighter" than a ported one?
Less than the internet insists. Most "slow, boomy ported bass" is either the room's modal behavior — which punishes both formats equally — or a mediocre sub tuned high to inflate its spec sheet. Can I plug the port to turn a ported sub into a sealed one?
Only when the manufacturer designed for it. A port is part of the box's tuning system, and some larger subwoofers ship with fitted plugs plus matching DSP modes that re-optimize the response sealed — used that way, it is a legitimate feature. Stuffing a sock in the port of a sub tuned to run vented is not a redesign: the electronics still expect the port's loading, and behavior below the old tune is not what a purpose-built sealed sub would do.
