"USB or XLR" is phrased as a microphone question, but it is really a system question: one self-contained box, or a chain of separate ones. A USB microphone is a whole recording front end hiding in a mic body — capsule, preamp, and converter in one shell that speaks straight to a computer. An XLR microphone is just the capsule; it needs an interface to supply gain, conversion, power, and monitoring. What each path actually is

A USB mic collapses the signal path into one object. The preamp and the analog-to-digital converter live inside the mic, so the "chain" is a mic and a cable. The USB path is genuinely cheaper to start, and for a solo creator that gap is real money. The XLR path costs more because you are also buying the interface — but that interface is a platform, not a sunk cost, which is the whole upgrade-path argument.

The upgrade-path math

Here is the part one-line recommendations skip. On the USB path, the day you outgrow the mic, you replace the mic — and you were also paying for a preamp and converter you now throw away.
