Gain Staging
Setting healthy levels at each link of the chain — target ~−18dBFS average.
Gain staging means each stage — mic, preamp, converter, plugin — receives a level it handles cleanly. Digital’s convention: average around −18dBFS, peaks comfortably below 0. That preserves headroom for mixing and keeps plugins in their designed operating range. Louder while tracking is not better; it is just closer to clipping.
