"Just get a Scarlett" has been the default answer to "what interface should I buy" for over a decade, which is precisely why it deserves skeptical grading rather than a lazy nod. Defaults accumulate; specs have to earn. The 4th Generation 2i2 — launched at $200, street price now sitting in the low $200s — turns out to be the rare default that got materially better in the generation change, and in the one spec most buyers do not know to check.

No interface maker prints round-trip latency on the box, because the honest number depends on your buffer size, sample rate, and driver. So compute the floor: at 48 kHz, a 64-sample buffer costs about 1.3 ms per direction — roughly 2.7 ms round trip before converter and USB overhead, which real devices then add. The beginner-honest answer, though, is the front-panel button: Direct Monitor routes your input straight to headphones with effectively zero latency, in mono or stereo, while the computer records at whatever buffer it likes. Tracking vocals over a beat, podcasting, voice-over — direct monitoring sidesteps the entire subject, and beginners should use it without shame. The assists: training wheels that hold
Auto Gain listens to ten seconds of your source and sets input level; Clip Safe watches while you record and pulls gain down before a hot take clips. It is fashionable to sneer at automation like this. We decline: the single most common ruined first recording is a clipped one, clipping is unfixable in post, and a device that quietly prevents it while you learn proper gain staging is doing honest work. Set-and-check beats set-and-pray.
The Air modes are taste, not truth: Presence is a high-frequency lift, Presence + Harmonic Drive adds saturation. Used on a dull spoken-word source they earn their place; used everywhere they are a coloration you will fight later. Record clean until you know you miss them.
What it is not
- Not a MIDI hub. No MIDI I/O — keyboard players step up to the 4i4.
- Not a two-person podcast studio with room to grow. Two preamps means two mics, full stop. A third guest is a different product tier.

Do I need to record at 192 kHz?
No. Record at 48 kHz, 24-bit — the delivery standard for video and streaming platforms and the sane default for music. The 24-bit word depth is what buys you headroom for conservative gain staging. The 192 kHz ceiling is a converter capability, not a quality mandate, and quadrupling your file sizes does not make a bedroom recording better.
