The Shure SM7B is the most recommended microphone on the internet and the least completely explained. The recommendation is usually one sentence; the requirements sheet is not. This is a $399 microphone that arrives with no stand, outputs one of the quietest signals in common use, and weighs enough to defeat cheap boom arms — and it is still, for a specific and very common situation, the right answer. The specific situation is the room you already have: untreated, reflective, occasionally noisy. Almost everything else about the SM7B is negotiable; that superpower is not.

Two rows run this review. Sensitivity, −59 dBV/Pa, is the demanding one — that is a very quiet output, and it sets the gain requirement everything else orbits. And the cardioid dynamic capsule is the forgiving one: it is why this mic thrives where condensers tattle.

Why untreated rooms love it

A condenser microphone hears like an honest witness: your voice, and also the drywall slap, the fridge two rooms over, the neighbor's dog. In a treated studio that transparency is the point. In a spare bedroom it is the sound everyone recognizes as "recorded at home."

The SM7B is a dynamic microphone with a cardioid pattern, worked close — three to six inches. That combination is a room-rejection machine: the capsule's lower sensitivity and your proximity stack the signal-to-room ratio massively in your favor, and the cardioid null points at the mess behind the mic. Not a distance mic: two feet away it sounds like a memory of you; this is a close-work instrument. And not a USB device: no interface, no sound. The mic itself does not — it is a passive dynamic design and safely ignores +48V if it is switched on. The confusion comes from inline boosters: if you add a CloudLifter or FetHead to feed a weak preamp, that booster is what needs phantom power to operate. SM7B alone: phantom irrelevant. Is the SM7B good for singing, or just speech?
